This past weekend, the Tampa Warriors and their families participated in the Ghost Trap Rodeo, sponsored by Ocean Aid 360. The Ghost Trap Rodeo event series is an opportunity for knowledgeable local anglers and boaters to come together in search of ghost traps and other types of marine debris. During removal events, participants will become citizen scientists by collecting data on the species removed from the derelict crab traps and fishing gear. Although winning prizes is certainly secondary in an event like this, at the conclusion, the anglers, boaters and volunteers on land have their haul weighed to see who removed the most debris. With some hard work both at sea and on land, our Warriors and their families won first place and left with a great prize. More importantly however, we helped our community and left with some great memories.
The Tampa Warriors had another busy weekend to close out the year. The inaugural Holiday Winter Hockey Jam was played and the Warriors submitted both an upper and a lower team to the Lightning ran tournament. The lower team played some tough competition but showed tremendous growth as the tournament went on. Their final game was their best thanks to an impressive third period where Josh Hurst netted his first ever goal and the team almost pulled off a comeback for the ages. The upper team won their first game before losing two straight to a strong Heroes and Surge team, but because of a tie breaker they still managed to squeak into the finals, where they once again lost to team Surge. While our Warriors didn’t come away with as many wins as they wanted to, it ended up being a great team building experience thanks to the families, friends, and volunteers that showed up and enjoyed a fun weekend of barbecuing and party games.
This past weekend our Tampa Warriors hosted a tournament at Florida Hospital Ice Center and held their own against some highly skilled opponents. The other teams included a speedy AFTAC team and the Warbirds, a program that came in all the way from Indiana. The first game our Warriors held on to win against the Warbirds. Winning 6-4 late in the third period, the game was cut short when a pane of glass shattered from a howitzer of a slap shot. The second game, the Warriors lost a nail biter to a split squad game combining both AFTAC and the Warbirds.
