The Tampa Warriors had another busy weekend to close out the year. The inaugural Holiday Winter Hockey Jam was played and the Warriors submitted both an upper and a lower team to the Lightning ran tournament. The lower team played some tough competition but showed tremendous growth as the tournament went on. Their final game was their best thanks to an impressive third period where Josh Hurst netted his first ever goal and the team almost pulled off a comeback for the ages. The upper team won their first game before losing two straight to a strong Heroes and Surge team, but because of a tie breaker they still managed to squeak into the finals, where they once again lost to team Surge. While our Warriors didn’t come away with as many wins as they wanted to, it ended up being a great team building experience thanks to the families, friends, and volunteers that showed up and enjoyed a fun weekend of barbecuing and party games.
This past weekend our Tampa Warriors hosted a tournament at Florida Hospital Ice Center and held their own against some highly skilled opponents. The other teams included a speedy AFTAC team and the Warbirds, a program that came in all the way from Indiana. The first game our Warriors held on to win against the Warbirds. Winning 6-4 late in the third period, the game was cut short when a pane of glass shattered from a howitzer of a slap shot. The second game, the Warriors lost a nail biter to a split squad game combining both AFTAC and the Warbirds.
The Tampa Bay Warriors beginner team was lucky enough to be honored at the Lightning game last week against the New Jersey Devils. During an intermission, our Warriors had the opportunity to sit on the bench while the Lightning PR announcer explained what our program is about:
The Tampa Warriors Ice Hockey Program was founded in November 2017 as an all-volunteer, non-profit organization whose purpose is to utilize ice hockey programs as part of the rehabilitation of military personnel “wounded in the defense of the United States”.
Multiple members have experienced a positive life altering effect after joining the program which provides a healthy and welcoming environment for veterans to get out of the house and regain the camaraderie they once had. A community driven program that is more than just a hockey team, family members are welcomed and involved in the program. The Program’s mission is to organize and administer an ice hockey program that provides a recreational, therapeutic experience and education. Not only was this an amazing experience for our players, it also helped people learn a little about or program and how we help veterans in our community.
