Washington D.C. – The USA Warriors Hockey Program, Inc. announced today that the Washington Capitals of the National Hockey League raised $42,266 during their playoff Beard-a-Thon to benefit the USA Warriors’s hockey programs.

The USA Warriors, based out of Rockville Maryland, encourages individuals who have disabilities incurred during military service to the United States to participate in the sport of ice hockey in an environment that is adapted to the level of their ability.  The Program also supports the formation of “USA Warrior Hockey Programs” locally and nationally.  The USA Warriors’ programs consist of standing team and sled or “sledge” hockey teams.  The USA Warriors is a strictly volunteer organization.

“Playing hockey in the D.C. area, there is nothing higher than working with the Capitals,” says USA Warriors sled goaltender and former Special Forces Detachment Commander Ben Harrow. “To have a relationship with the Caps and for them to help us and raise money for us and for the Caps to support us, we couldn’t ask for another organization to help us out the way that they do,” Harrow continued.

Donations are extremely important to the program for the purchase of ice time, gear for new and current players and travel.  Most importantly, properly funded programs amount to important physical and mental rehabilitation for men and women injured defending the United States. The USA Warriors also gives former armed forces personnel the sense of camaraderie they once had while in the service, thus, aiding in their transition to the civilian world and in dealing with the stresses created by military service.

“For the Capitals to help local vets, like they are doing, is awesome,” says USA Warriors standing team assistant Captain and former Army Infantryman Jonathan Albrecht. “This program has helped me continue my life and I know it has helped a lot of others as well,” he continued.
